In our pursuit of the toughest titanium watch, we drew inspiration from the very best: Mother Nature

Hexagons are found throughout nature; from the largest planets in the universe to the smallest microscopic compounds. Taking their cue from nature, many industries use hexagonal structures in product design because of their efficiency and strength. RZE decided to harness these properties in an effort to create its strongest titanium watch yet. Introducing UltraHex™.

The first naturally occurring hexagonal structure that probably comes to mind is the honeycomb. This shape forms the geometrically precise homes built by bees. It can even be found in the structure of their eyes. Hexagons appear in honeycombs because they are one of the most efficient ways to fill a space while using the least possible material. In a hexagonal grid, the total length of the dividing walls is kept to a minimum while covering a large area. This means a honeycomb requires less wax to build while still achieving excellent compressive strength. It is also one of the few shapes that tessellates, meaning it can be repeated across a surface without leaving gaps or overlapping. Tessellation prevents wasted space and energy, allowing maximum strength and efficiency within a compact structure.

We love the modern appearance of titanium watches, but untreated titanium oxidises easily, making its surface highly susceptible to scratches. Although some people enjoy the well-worn appearance of untreated titanium, RZE prefers its watches to remain exceptionally durable and retain their day-one look.

The answer to this challenge is RZE’s distinctive UltraHex™ hard titanium coating. Without sacrificing titanium’s low weight, UltraHex™ dramatically increases surface hardness to up to eight times that of stainless steel. It was developed for adventurers who continually push themselves to new heights and need a robust watch they do not have to handle with excessive care.

UltraHex™ is RZE’s proprietary hard titanium coating, applied to all its watches, significantly improving their strength and durability. The result is a lightweight, comfortable watch capable of withstanding the knocks and impacts of an active life.
